Neuromodulation

interventional pain management

Spinal Cord Stimulation.

Neuromodulation is an interventional pain management treatment  performed by trained and experienced pain management specialists. The treatment approach uses electrical stimulation of specialized parts of the spinal cord, and spinal nerves to modify the regular pain signals so that the chronic pain signals are modulated at the different levels of our body’s nervous system – at the central or peripheral level.

What conditions can neuromodulation treat?
There are many applications for neuromodulation treatment. The following are some common conditions:

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) /RSD
  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
  • Lumbar or Cervical Radiculopathy
  • Phantom Pain Syndrome
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

DRG Stimulation.

Once a patient is identified as a candidate for the above treatment, the patient undergoes 7-10 days of trial treatment that involves the placement of fish wire like electrodes, also called leads, into the specialized part of the spinal cord or close to the special roots at the junction of the spinal cord and existing nerves called DRG or Dorsal Root Ganglion. The Trial stimulation is carried out with an EXTERNAL battery for a period of 7 -10 days and then the trial electrodes are removed from the spinal area. If the patient experiences up to or more than 70% improvement in his/her pain symptoms with significant improvement in the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), the patient qualifies for permanent implants of the electrodes (like in Trial) along with an INTERNAL Pulse Generator (IPG). The IPG delivers electrical signals to the spinal cord or nerves via implanted electrodes that interrupt the abnormal pain signals coming from damaged nerves or body parts. You may feel a tingling sensation replacing your pain or you may not feel pain with High-Frequency Stimulation. You can control the stimulation using a remote controller.

Dr. Vodapally is one of the few experienced Pain Management Specialists to undertake neuromodulation Trial and permanent implants. This means Dr. Vodapally can care for you from the period of initial evaluation through the surgery and post-operative  comprehensive management of the implanted neuromodulation system.
